DSL/ADSL broadband in the UK is a widely available internet connection that uses existing copper telephone lines. It offers moderate speeds suitable for browsing and streaming. ADSL provides asymmetric speeds, with faster downloads than uploads. Availability depends on proximity to the telephone exchange, with speeds varying based on distance.
The most simply named type of broadband in the UK is fibre optic. This quite literally uses fibre optic cables to send data. It comes in two kinds – FTTC, or ‘superfast’, and FTTP, or ‘ultrafast’. The first is Fibre to the Cabinet, the slower of the two. Fibre optic cables go to the ‘cabinet’ on your street, and from there, copper cables go to your house. According to Ofcom’s research, superfast broadband, at speeds of or above 30mbps, is now available to 90% of UK properties.
Cable broadband in the UK uses coaxial cables to deliver internet access. It offers high-speed connectivity suitable for streaming, gaming, and large downloads. Cable broadband is typically provided by companies like Virgin Media and offers faster speeds than DSL/ADSL, with availability depending on infrastructure in specific areas.
Extenders or mesh systems can be added to your broadband package to extend the coverage of your Wi-Fi network, ensuring a strong signal throughout your home.
Many broadband providers offer optional security suites that include antivirus software, firewall protection, and other tools to keep your devices and data safe from online threats.
A static IP address provides a fixed, unchanging address for your broadband connection, which is useful for hosting servers, accessing devices remotely, or running certain applications.
Some broadband providers offer premium tech support services, providing priority access to knowledgeable support staff who can assist with troubleshooting and resolving technical issues promptly.
Upgrading to a more advanced router can improve the performance and reliability of your broadband connection, offering features such as faster Wi-Fi speeds, better coverage, and advanced security options.
Parental control features allow you to set restrictions on internet access for specific devices or users, block inappropriate content, and monitor online activity to keep children safe while they’re online.
Some broadband providers offer cloud storage services as an add-on, providing additional space for storing backups, syncing files across devices, or sharing documents and media with others.
Speed boost options allow you to upgrade your broadband package to a faster connection speed, providing quicker downloads, smoother streaming, and improved performance for online gaming and other activities.
Many broadband providers offer optional TV packages that include access to a range of television channels, on-demand content, and premium channels such as sports or movie channels.
Some broadband packages include a home phone service with inclusive minutes for landline calls, while others offer optional VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services for making calls over the internet.
Consider bundling your broadband with other services like TV or phone from the same provider. Many companies offer discounted rates for bundled packages, making it a cost-effective option. By consolidating your subscriptions, you not only save money but also simplify your billing process.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate with your current broadband provider. If you’ve been a loyal customer or have found better deals elsewhere, discuss your options with them. Often, providers are willing to offer discounts, special promotions, or upgraded packages to retain customers. Additionally, regularly checking competitor offers can give you leverage when negotiating.
Assess your internet usage habits to ensure you’re not paying for more bandwidth than you actually need. If you primarily use the internet for basic browsing, emailing, and occasional streaming, you may not require a high-speed package. Downgrading to a lower-speed plan can result in significant cost savings without sacrificing your online experience.
Keep an eye out for promotions, introductory offers, or limited-time deals from broadband providers. These can include discounted rates, waived installation fees, or free equipment upgrades for new customers or those willing to switch providers. Taking advantage of such offers can lead to substantial savings on your broadband expenses.
